Settle to Carlisle Railway

The Settle to Carlisle railway is a main line railway and part of the National Rail network. Scheduled trains and a number of special steam train journeys run throughout the year.

Constructed in the 1870s the 116 km (72-mile) rail line connects Leeds, Settle and Appleby with Carlisle. Passing over the 24 arches of the spectacular Ribblehead Viaduct (30m high, 400m long), through the 2404m (2629yd) long Blea Moor tunnel, reaching a summit height of 356m (1,169 feet) at Ais Gill in the Mallerstang valley.
