Coverdale links Middleham in Wensleydale with Kettlewell in Wharfedale by a steep and narrow road. The small villages of Carlton, Caldbergh, Horse House, Coverham, and West Scrafton line the dale sides, separated by meadows and pastureland.

Miles Coverdale (1488 to1568) was born in the district of North Yorkshire known as Coverdale, and is credited with producing the first complete printed translation of the Bible into English.
