A subsidiary of the larger Wensleydale, Bishopdale is narrow and steep sided with a characteristic glacial u-shape. The dale is 11km (7 miles) long and runs parallel to Waldendale along the B6160 Kidstones Pass, which connects Upper Wharfedale with Wensleydale.

There are only two villages in Bishopdale positioned either side of Bishopdale Beck, Thoralby to the north and Newbiggin on the south side, typical dales farm buildings can be seen scattered throughout the rest of the dale.
